Job Description: The project seeks to design and implement a survey-based contingent valuation (CV) method for estimating the value that respondents place on goods and services that do not have market prices. In particular, the project plans to consider two scenarios regarding “property rights”Plantations have the “right” to irrigate, despite the damage caused to Lake Beseka, the Awash River, and the impacts on downstream environments, including local residents (e.g., farmers who rely on the lake and river) and the animal wildlife in Awash National Park, and Downstream residents have the “right” to enjoy the ecosystem services provided by healthy lake and riverine environments (in addition to not having to pay for re-routing railways or transplant entire towns due to lake level rise), despite the losses that might be suffered by the sugarcane plantations upstream.
The collaborator’s main activities include:
- Lead the design of the contingent valuation instrument, data analysis (to be supported by an IFPRI RA), and writing of one research paper
- Contribute to the in-person training, pre-testing, and implementation protocol
- Contribute to communication and outreach
