The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

UN Habitat Job Vacancy 2022

Responsibilities: Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Human Settlements Officer on SDG Localization and Local Governments, the intern will:

  • Collaborate with team members to develop a communication and social media strategy to promote the work of the SDG Localization and Local Governments team and the SDG Cities team externally.
  • Support the development of new social media accounts (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Youtube).
  • Assist with the creation of content and explore new material to promote SDG Localization under the work of the SDG Localization and Local Governments team and the SDG Cities team.
  • Support the production of visibility materials to promote relevant events, projects and other activities, including social media posts, infographics, multi-media assets, emails, letters, flyers, messaging, and outreach material.
  • Assist with disseminating visibility materials through the Teams’ networks and UN-Habitat’s communication channels.
  • Develop graphic material for reports, knowledge products, and online content developed by the team.
  • Develop infographics to translate complex processes into digestible and appealing visual representations for the SDG Cities and SDG Localization processes.
  • Website design and maintenance, including the setting up of a new UN-Habitat SDG localization website and regular updates of the UN-Habitat’s Voluntary Local Reviews (https://unhabitat.org/topics/voluntary-local-reviews), SDG Cities online platforms (https://www.sdg[1]cities.org/) and Multilevel Governance (https://www.multilevelgovernance.org/).
  • Ensure coherency and consistency between communication material of the SDG Localization team and SDG Cities team.
  • Facilitate internal communication and maintain regular relations with UN-Habitat’s Communication and Information Technology teams. Stay current on new social media tools and identify new communications strategies.

Qualification:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Experience:

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
  • Experience with social media messaging and good writing skills is required.
  • Experience with graphic design software, video design software (Adobe Premiere Pro), and visual development skills is desirable
  • Knowledge of website development and maintenance (Web flow, Wix, WordPress) is desirable.
  • Knowledge in understanding the importance of localizing the SDGs and the main challenges that local and regional governments are facing in implementing the SDGs, particularly in reporting, is desirable.

Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English both oral and written is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
