The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

UN-Habitat Job Vacancy 2022

Duties and Responsibilities: Under the overall supervision of the Head of the Urban Lab and the direct supervision of the Programme Manager, based at UN-Habitat’s Headquarters in Nairobi. The consultant will perform the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Development of a workplan required for the development of the SDG Project Assessment Tool 2.0. The workplan will help coordinate the work, and the consultant will manage and revise the workplan on a continuous basis as necessary. The workplan should indicate phasing of the work, incl. milestone deliverables, stakeholder engagement, workshops and meetings.
  • Lead implementation of the workplan, including the engagement of relevant UN-Habitat staff and thematic experts, as well as, ensure close liaison and coordination with other consultants engaged specifically for the further development of the Tool (e.g. Digital Product Design and Development Expert).
  • Gathering of data and qualitative information required for the development of the SDG Project Assessment Tool 2.0, including consolidation and analysis of already existing information, papers, reports, notes etc.
  • Based on the current Sustainability Principles and Performance criteria embedded in the SDG Tool, support the further definition of thematic scope and content of the SDG Assessment Tool 2.0, incl. identification of thematic areas and topics to be included and/or revised for the SDG Tool to be comprehensive and cover all relevant areas. The consultant is hereby required to support development of the thematic scope and content of the SDG Project Assessment Tool 2.0.
  • Review the current application modalities of the SDG Tool to enhance it’s user-friendiness and applicability among different user groups.
  • Support the technical development of a digital solution (“software”) for online usage and application of the SDG Tool 2.0, incl. bridging of information and knowledge to the technical developer.
  • As required, drafts inputs for technical papers, analytical studies, policy reports and publications relating to the SDG Tool 2.0.
  • As required and outlined in the workplan, assist in the organization and servicing of workshops, expert group meetings, panels, round tables, training seminars etc. on the development of the SDG Tool.
  • Prepares and implements a dissemination plan for the SDG Tool 2.0, incl. presentations, talking points, statements, speeches and other inputs for external events e.g. the World Urban Forum in June 2022.

Qualification:

  • Advanced university degree (Masters) in social sciences, engineering, urbanism, public policy, or related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience professional experience as an full stack web developer, IU/UX designer, or in a similar position is required.
  • Demonstrable portfolio of released web and mobile applications is an asset.
  • Whole life cycle app development experience as a solo developer or in a team environment is desirable.
