Duties and Responsibilities: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
Qualifications/ special skills:
- Competency: Professionalism: Demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines, and achieving results; Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; Remains calm in stressful situations.
- Planning and Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; Uses time efficiently.
- Communication: Speaks and write clearly and effectively; Listen to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; Tailors language, tone, style, and format to match the audience; Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
- Creativity: Actively seeks to improve programmes or services; Takes calculated risks on new and unusual ideas; thinks big and bold and if has a strong idea, takes it through to impact; Takes an interest in new ideas and new ways of doing things; Is not bound by current thinking or traditional approaches
- Academic Qualifications: Master’s degree in communications, international relations, political science or related field required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
- Experience: Minimum ten years of work experience in communication or related fields required. Experience in organizing and implementing events in an international organizational setting is desirable. Knowledge and expertise in high-level environment and sustainable development issues is an asset.
- Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable
