Job Responsibilities:

Incumbent will perform the following duties:

  • Develops and implements an occupational health and safety program for the UN compound in Gigiri, incorporating input from staff and management, key sections including facilities, security and senior management.
  • Develops and implements an emergency medical preparedness system for the duty station in close liaison with the Security and Safety Services Service and the Business Continuity Services of UNON.
  • Designs and develops a system to ensure efficient services provision at the UN clinic.
  • Undertakes day-to-day clinical duties, e.g. walk-in clinic, emergencies, pre-placement and periodic medical examinations, immunizations etc.
  • Refers staff to, and follows up with outside specialists, as necessary.
  • Provides health education.
  • Organizes/participates in addressing work environment and occupational health issues.
  • Advises Administration on medical standards for recruitment, sick leave, and medical evacuations as per United Nations policies and guidelines.
  • Manages/supports day-to-day operations.
  • Deputizes for the Medical Officer during his/her absence.
  • Supervises UN Cares coordinator, medical officers, staff counselor, UN Cares coordination officer, laboratory technicians and nurses; ensures availability of supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment.
  • Ensures appropriate training programs are implemented in order to maintain and develop the medical capabilities (e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, first aid and CPR).

Qualification:

  • Advanced University Degree (Doctorate (MD) or equivalent) in medicine, including residency in one of the medical specialties, preferably internal medicine or public health or occupational health, is required. Must be registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board and licensed to practice in Kenya. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible clinical experience in one of the areas of medicine is required.
  • Experience in implementing a health and safety programme in the workplace environment is desirable.
  • Experience in medical emergency operations and planning is required.
  • Experience in assessing medical facilities in the field is desirable.
  • Experience of the local health system in Kenya and understanding of local culture and language is required
  • Experience establishing effective collaboration and partnerships with officials at all levels inside and outside the organization is desirable.
  • Experience handling the COVID-19 pandemic in an organization setting is required.
