UNON Job Vacancy 2021

Purpose of the Assignment:

The purpose of the assignment is to provide support to research analysis, monitoring and reporting in line with UNODC’s mandate under UNSC resolution 2551 (2020) and future mandate pursuant to new resolutions.

Under the overall supervision of the UNODC GMCP Programme Coordinator, the consultant will implement the following tasks:

  • Serve as the focal point to UNODC’s Global eLearning Programme to produce GMCP’s interactive course provisionally titled Basic Training on Charcoal Forensic Examination, including by developing a storyboard based on the existing Charcoal Forensic Guide.
  • Collect final inputs from partners to help finalize the Handbook on the Implementation of United Nations Sanctions in the Gulf of Aden.
  • Complete preparations ahead of the inter-agency meeting with Government of Kenya partners, including but not limited to compiling a list of delegates, assisting with set-up on the day of the meeting, taking meeting minutes, and preparing a post for UNODC GMCP’s Twitter account and a web story to upload onto ROEA’s website for enhanced visibility, among other things.
  • Deliver a presentation to the African Wildlife Forensic Network on GMCP’s Charcoal Forensic Guide, involving the development of a PowerPoint slide and short speaking notes.
  • Support the procurement of satellite phones to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) by liaising with GMCP’s administrative staff, the vendor, and KRA for successful delivery.
  • Serve as the focal point for the study on disruption methods against al-Shabaab financing, including by providing research assistance to three consultants, arranging interviews, and collecting time sheets, among other things.
  • Follow guidance from GARS’s Programme Coordinator on next steps for the possible development and delivery of joint UNODC-UNEP training to Gulf State officials on how to implement and enforce the Somali charcoal sanctions.
  • Provide support to the GARS team on the procurement of drones in support of the Government of Kenya’s border management efforts, drawing on past discussions with KRA and the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS).
  • Assist GMCP’s MDA Analyst in producing a quarterly charcoal assessment for circulation with external partners.
  • Support GMCP in chairing the November quadrilateral meeting, including by preparing a provisional meeting agenda, disseminating a meeting link, and circulating meeting minutes.
  • Perform ad-hoc activities as requested by GARS’s Programme Coordinator and other senior team members.

Qualification:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in English, development, international relations, social science, law, political science, or criminology, is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the areas of research and analysis, project development and support is required;
  • Experience working with international organizations is desirable;
  • Excellent research and communication skills are required.
