Task description

Under the overall supervision of Director, Rule of Law and immediate supervision of the Senior Rule of Law Officer/Senior Judicial Affairs Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Provide technical and operational assistance to national partners in programme development, design, an (implementation to increase coordination across the justice chain and enhance capacity of national justice and security institutions to ensure accountability, including through monitoring and advocacy in support of mobile courts and other co-locations with national justice actors in Juba and Field Offices.
  • Develop and maintain relations with government officials and other key players and actively promote coordination and communication between international and national partners, with a view to supporting deployment of mobile courts and ensuring that all technical advice is provided in a harmonized manner and support is consistent with international best practice and human rights.
  • Support the section’s legal reform activities by researching and formulating technical legal and policy guidance for mission leadership, and international and national partners on a range of issues relating to the implementation of the R-ARCSS.

Eligibility Criteria

Required education level:

  • Master degree or equivalent in law is required.
  • A focus on transitional justice or international development is desirable.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Required experience:

  • 3 years of experience in the field of practicing lawyer, prosecutor, judge, legal academic or advisor in the field of justice at the national or international level, either as a magistrate, in Government, or in a law firm, with experience in criminal law matters is required.
  • Field experience is required, including preferably at least one year of work experience in a transitional, developmental or post-conflict setting.
