Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Representative and within the framework of the UNODC Regional Programme for Southern Africa, and with direct supervision of the Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants programme officer, the contractor will perform the following tasks:

  • Participate in the development and implementation of SAMM programme activities with a specific focus on Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants by providing substantive and technical expertise;
  • Support the planning and implementation of the UNODC aspect of the SAMM programme activities as required, in particular in South Africa and other Southern African Member States, in close coordination with the Government counterparts, donors and other stakeholders, based on best practices, including UNODC manuals, handbooks, guides, and standards and norms;
  • Organize training workshops, meetings, official and assessment missions, develop concept notes and terms of references as required;
  • Provide programme administrative assistance, plan and arrange official travel, respond to complex information requests and inquiries; set up and maintain files/records and organize meetings;
  • Draft correspondence on substantive and budget-related issues and prepare and update periodic substantive reports, briefing notes, graphic and statistical summaries and programme spreadsheets;
  • Provide support to administrative functions related to workplans and reporting on an ongoing basis within UNODC on the implementation status and delivery of programme activities.

Eligibility Criteria

Qualifications/special skills:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of one year of relevant working experience in administration and implementing projects or in research aimed at enhancing the Rule of Law and criminal justice systems is required.
  • Knowledge of international legal instruments against Trafficking in Persons, the Smuggling of Migrants and transnational organized crime is desirable;
  • Previous experience working with UN and/or Government entities is desirable;
  • Good data analysis, strategic planning, and presentation skills is desirable;

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations Secretariat language is an advantage.
