IFPRI Job Vacancy 2022

Essential Duties:

Sample Size

  • These will be representative surveys at the national level for the two crops. Sample selection for vitamin A maize (VAM) and iron beans will be based on the sampling frame of these crops (i.e., farmers growing maize for the maize survey and farmers growing beans for the bean survey). However, there may be overlap in some regions where farmers produce both beans and maize. Because of this, please provide a budget estimate under two scenarios: 1800 farmers in total (roughly 600 bean and 1200 maize farmers) and 2400 farmers (roughly 800 bean and 1600 maize farmers). The final number of farmers per crop may vary.

Sample Selection and Sampling Plan

  • This will be done in close collaboration with HarvestPlus and researchers from MSU. We expect to first identify the provinces, then districts and wards, and finally villages. Within each village, we will identify farmers for interviews. We expect to interview approximately 6-12 farmers per village.

Time Frame

  • The surveys need to be implemented after the harvest of the crops is finished. We expect this to be sometime in late July or August. The survey firm should provide an estimate of how long data collection will last.

Questionnaire(s)

  • HarvestPlus will be responsible for preparing the instrument(s) needed for data collection, in English. The estimated length will be 14 pages (not including the title, introduction, consent statement page). We expect the survey firm to make suggestions (e.g., colloquial terms or words, improvements to wording of questions) to improve the questionnaire(s) before and after training of enumerators and pilot testing the questionnaire(s). The survey firm will also be responsible for translating the questionnaire(s) to the local language.

Enumerator Selection and Training

  • The survey firm will be responsible for the recruitment of enumerators, their training, and provision of all the logistical support for the survey field work, and meeting any legal and insurance requirements to carry the work. The training of enumerators should last five working days (in an appropriate space), and include a pilot testing of questionnaires in day 4. Only enumerators who understand the questionnaire well and who have good interview skills should be hired for data collection (thus, the survey firm should train more enumerators than actually needed, to select the best ones). HarvestPlus and MSU researchers will participate in the training of enumerators.

Position in Organization:

  • Applicant Search Location: Harare, Zimbabwe
  • Position Code: 2022-006-016
  • Application Deadline: April 1, 2022

Qualification:

  • Experience conducting large (>1000 households) farmer/rural household surveys.
  • Demonstrated experience assembling and coordinating data collection teams, and guaranteeing data quality.
  • Good English writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in the crops of interest preferred.
