It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

UN Habitat Job Vacancy 2022

Responsibilities:

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the intern will:

  • Support with communications in the project and communication products (such as project flyers) to raise the visibility of the joint OECD/UNH Cities Connect Initiative.
  • Work closely with the cities connect programme manager to develop communications activities and design work.
  • Support partner engagement and help set up relevant meetings with partners, as tasked by the supervisor.
  • Follow up on actions agreed on in the project meetings with the relevant stakeholders.

Substantive contributions:

  • Write and prepare brief notes.
  • Development of project presentations.
  • Support the drafting of outputs such as concept notes, reports, background materials, technical studies, case studies, and other thematic analyses as required for the cities connect initiative.
  • Support the Innovation Unit’s Capacity Development Programme on Urban Innovation, and help organize roundtables and webinars, and event advocacy.
  • Research on topics related to climate action in intermediary cities and in the selected counties for the project, with a view to support the production of normative publications.
  • Perform any other tasks as assigned by the team or supervisor.

Qualification:

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of studies:

Studies related to Development Studies, Human Geography, Project Management, Business Administration, Strategic Management, or related areas. Any background in Urban development or innovation is a bonus.

Experience and interest in communication and design technologies and (graphic) design software, including but not limited to Adobe Creative Suites (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), ArcGIS, or other spatial data software is an asset.

Strong oral and written communication skills in English; demonstrated research and writing skills.

Kenyan Nationals with an interest and knowledge of the current affairs in the country’s local and national government are encouraged to apply.

Experience:

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.

Experience working in a multicultural environment is desirable.

Knowledge of how this internship will correspond with your academic interest or contribute to your professional development is desirable.
