The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
  • The Donor Relations and Strategic Resource Partnerships Unit of UN-Habitat is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with donors and mobilizing resources for the organization’s projects and programmes.
  • The Unit works closely with other units within UN-Habitat to ensure effective and efficient utilization of donor resources.
  • The Donor Relations Intern will assist the Donor Relations and Resource Mobilization Unit with donor correspondence, archive management, donor communication material development, donor research, and event organization. Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
  • Under the supervision of the Head of Donor Relations and Strategic Partnership Unit, the intern will:
  • Assist in drafting, tracking progress, and following up on correspondence with donors, ensuring timely and accurate communication.
  • Manage archives of donor correspondence, files, emails, and other communications in a structured manner.
  • Update projects reports to donors, ensuring accuracy and incorporating project status changes promptly and efficiently
  • Assist in developing donor communication materials such as proposals, reports, and newsletters, ensuring high-quality content.
  • Conduct research on potential donors and funding opportunities, including identifying new prospects and analyzing donor trends and patterns.
  • Support in event organization, including logistical planning, coordination, and execution.

Qualification:

  • Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher),
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent),
  • Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Preferred areas of study: International relations, International development, Diplomacy, Communications, Marketing, Business management, or a related social science field.
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
  • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
