UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

UN-Habitat Job Vacancy 2021

Job Purpose: The intern will be assigned to the Human Rights and Social Inclusion Unit. The Human Rights and Social Inclusion Unit (HRSI) falls under the Urban Practices Branch. The HRSI Unit carries out on two tracks: the social inclusion dimension, which encompasses human rights; gender; children, youth and older persons; and disability; and cross-cutting thematic area: safety.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide support in organizing and conduction of meetings relevant to the work of the unit, including drafting of documents, preparation for and backstopping of meetings, and follow-up activities;
  • Assist in planning, preparing and implementing HRSI related events (meetings, workshops, conferences, expert group meetings, Community of Practice meetings etc.) and support the implementation of specific recommendations arising from these events;
  • Review and provide HRSI inputs on concept notes, publications, position papers and any other documents/materials to ensure their inclusion of all cross-cutting issues.
  • In collaboration with other team members, support logistics during webinars and other online meetings and activities; including using Microsoft Teams;
  • Assist in the preparation of draft minutes, talking points, speeches, reports and other materials related to the unit;
  • Assist in maintaining awareness of current human rights, gender and social inclusion issues, to include relevant developments in the country(ies) / thematic issues concerned.
  • Assist in supporting internal capacity building on human rights / gender / social inclusion, including the Human Rights-based Approach to development.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Qualification:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Experience:

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
  • Working knowledge of crosscutting thematic issues (i.e. gender, human rights, youth, children, older persons, people with disabilities, safety etc.) and their intersectionality. Please explain how you meet this criterion using examples.
  • Knowledge of human rights and social inclusion monitoring and reporting as well as preparing summaries, minutes, talking points, speeches, quantitative and analytical reports and other materials on a variety of human rights/gender/social inclusion issues is desirable. Please explain how you meet this criterion using examples.
  • Ability to plan, prepare and organize events, meetings, workshops, conferences and expert groups meetings using key coordination tools (Microsoft teams, zoom, excel etc.) Please explain how you meet this criterion using examples.
