UNODC Job Vacancy 2022

Job Responsibilities: Within assigned authority and within the framework of the Programme “Strengthening the Administration of Justice and Operationalising Alternatives to Imprisonment in Kenya (PLEAD)”, the incumbent will assist the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer heading the Crime Prevention Criminal Justice Programme and the Programme Officer with the day-to-day management of programme activities. The incumbent will also assist in other related activities in the context of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme, if required. The incumbent will be responsible for the following specific duties:

  • Assist the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer heading the Programme and the Programme Officer and other team members in identifying technical assistance needs from the institutions and developing sustainable strategies to reform and strengthen the institutions.
  • Assist the Programme Officer in providing substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging issues and trends, participating in evaluation or research activities and studies.
  • Provide administrative and substantive support to the Programme Officer with regards to the consultative and other meetings, workshops, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc.
  • Support the Programme Officer in preparing for field missions as well as participating in local missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries.
  • Network and build relationships with local organizations, groups or individuals and reports on the implementation of project activities as well as supports and/or participate in local volunteering initiatives.
  • Assist in performing consulting assignments, in collaboration with the national counterparts, by assisting in the planning and facilitating workshops, proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposed participants, preparation of background documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc.
  • Assist in coordinating activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.)
  • Assist with the preparation of technical presentations on UNODC regional activities. Support substantive presentations on behalf of UNODC on crime prevention and criminal justice at relevant international, regional and national law enforcement and criminal justice events, as required.
  • Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, briefing notes, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications relating to the project, correspondence with governments, working papers, mission reports, analyses, briefings, presentations, policy proposals and documents, regular and ad hoc reports, studies, summary reports, manuals, guides and toolkits. Collect and compile relevant background data and information; undertake desk research and assessment missions.

Qualification:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in criminal justice, criminology, law, political science, management or other relevant discipline, is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP)/the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible professional experience in programme management relevant to crime prevention and criminal justice issues OR the successful completion of the Young Professionals Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) is required.
  • Experience in programme and project development, coordination and implementation is required.
  • Work experience in criminal justice reform is required.
  • Work experience within the United Nations system or a similar international organization is desirable.
  • Work experience in Africa is desirable.
