Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Motor Transport Officer in Bentiu Transport Section, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Conduct repair and maintenance services on United Nations Owned Equipment (UNOE) including 4x4s, Bus Light & Medium (Ford/Nissan), Trucks (MHE) and Forklifts in accordance with manufacturer specifications, ensuring all safety procedures are followed when repairing and fitting replacement spare parts.
  • Carrying out routine/emergency, electrical, vehicle air conditioning and hydraulic repairs and maintenance on above UNOE.
  • Checking/Installing Carlog where required, downloading data/updating vehicle Carlog system following maintenance etc.
  • Conduct vehicle, truck recoveries and roadside repairs in the field or area of responsibilities.
  • Assisting by carrying out vehicles’ road test after completion of repairs.
  • Ensuring workshop is adequately equipped with safety tools/equipment and ensure compliance with existing health and safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Assisting with documenting of vehicle maintenance and repair, assigning spare parts and manpower, process service orders in Umoja system.
  • Coaching, mentoring, and sharing experience with national colleagues to develop their work performance and professional skills in the respective specialized area.
  • Maintains warehouse records, prepare weekly, monthly, and technical reports and submits them to the workshop supervisor in accordance with the established UN procedures and deadlines.
  • Processes the vehicle write-off cases in accordance with the established procedures.
  • Conducting vehicle inspection during handover of vehicles to UN staff. This inspection involves capturing of vehicle details, checking for damages, checking for missing tools and other fitted equipment e.g., communication equipment.
  • Performing various additional related duties as and when assigned by the Supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day).
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote capacity development activities and transfer of skills to national personnel during the assignment;

Eligibility Criteria

Required education level:

  • Technical/vocational diploma in Automotive Technology, Engineering, Transportation logistics and inventory.

Required experience:

  • 5 years of experience in automotive electrical trouble shooting and repair, hydraulic repairs, diesel engine repair, suspensions, gearbox and clutch assy repairs including simple vehicle body repairs.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of automotive electronic diagnostic tools.
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting and reporting skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work professionally and effectively in a challenging environment.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision and ability to work with tight deadlines.

Languages:

  • English, Level: Fluent, Required
  • Arabic, Level: Working knowledge, Desirable
