Job Responsibilities: In this regard, the individual contractor shall have the following duties and responsibilities;

  • Make sure that the consultant/contractor examine artworks, both visually and using scientific tools such as x-rays, infrared photography, microscopic analysis and/or other relevant methods as needed to determine the extent and causes of deterioration;
  • Evaluation of artworks restoration options, and advise on proposed viable options for treatment or preventive measures.
  • Supervise and monitor restoration process to bring the artwork closer to a previous or assumed appearance or function, by closely monitoring the consultant appointed for the contract administration;
  • Review and verify compliance of the artworks restoration design to be developed by the consultant is in the frame of their service contract;
  • Ensure that full conservation records are kept by writing up notes on the artwork’s condition and any previous restoration work that has been done;
  • Confirm that a visual record of the object for identification purposes and to illustrate its condition are in place.
  • Monitor and record display and storage conditions in order to keep artworks in a stable condition.
  • Check that appropriate standard conservation records in the specialist area are developed and maintained
  • Make sure that the consultant keeps up to date with the latest conservation techniques and best practices in the process of artwork conservation;
  • Monitoring key phases of the implementation of the artworks are compatible with terms and periods foreseen by the contract;
  • Provide clear and comprehensive inputs and comments to the consultant firm and contractor during the processes of dilapidation survey, preparatory treatment, protection and conservation, and post renovation works.
  • Assist in the technical evaluation for the selection of the artworks restoration firm in charge of the works;
  • Monitor and oversee (key phases) of the implementation of the works; check conformity of works with design, specifications, terms and conditions under the contract, by closely monitoring the consultant appointed for the contract administration;
  • Assist AH technical team in commissioning the artworks and ensure proper inventory;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualification:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in areas that include but not limited to Art Conservation, Fine Arts, Art History or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience (4 Years Mandatory & 3 Years Desirable) in restoration of artworks, preferably heritage artworks. Experience with executing a project for a public institution in the relevant areas and knowledge of Ethiopian historical/art/cultural/heritage is highly desirable.
