AU-IBAR is a specialized technical office of the African Union Commission (AUC), headed by the Director who reports directly to the AUC through the Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture (DREA).

Founded in 1951 to study the epidemiological situation and fight rinderpest in Africa, AU-IBAR’s mandate covers all aspects of animal resources, including livestock, fisheries and wildlife, across the entire African continent. Scope of the Consultancy

The Feed and Fodder Consultant shall:

  • (i) Provide training to identified stakeholders to enhance their understanding of feed and fodder questions and topics, including explanations of relevant terminologies, concepts, and key aspects related to the assessment.
  • (ii) Support identification and mapping of different stakeholders based on the assessment guides.
  • (iii) Be available to answer any questions or provide clarifications to participants during the data collection process to ensure that the questions are understood and answered accurately.
  • (iv) Conduct in-depth interviews with key stakeholders and respondents using provided Interview Guides in a structured and unbiased manner.
  • (v) Facilitate and lead the FGD sessions, guiding discussions in a way that encourages participants to share their experiences and insights related to feed and fodder.
  • (vi) Assist in compiling data collected from KIIs and FGDs, ensuring that the information is organized and structured in a way that allows for meaningful analysis.
  • (vii) Verify the accuracy and consistency of the data collected during interviews and discussions. Cross-reference information from different sources to ensure reliability.
  • (viii) Monitor the quality of discussions and interviews to maintain a high standard of data collection. Provide feedback to National Assessment Coordinator or other assessment team members as needed to improve the process.
  • (ix) Collaborate with Data Management Consultant to provide insights and context related to feed and fodder management when compiling and analyzing the collected data.
  • (x) Contribute to the preparation of assessment reports by providing information and insights from the KIIs and FGDs, making recommendations based on the findings.
  • (xi) Continuously communicate with the assessment team to share insights, challenges, and emerging themes from the interviews and discussions, which can inform the assessment’s direction and focus.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Agriculture Economics, Animal Science, Agronomy, Agribusiness Management and any other related field of expertise.
  • Experience in conducting agricultural research or assessments related to feed and fodder, livestock or farming communities.
  • Experience in survey data collection, conducting qualitative interviews and facilitating focus group discussions.
  • Familiarity with survey and assessment data collection tools such as interview scripts, ODK tools, Online forms and spreadsheets.
  • Oral and written communication abilities, with the capacity to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to cultural diversity, especially in the context of the assessment’s location.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural sensitivity when engaging with respondents.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively as part of a team, including coordinating with the assessment team and RAFFs Project Staff.
  • All reports and consultancy outputs will be in English. In the course of execution of the assignment, proficiency in local languages will be required for engagement with relevant to the assessment country or stakeholders.
