Tasks and responsibilities

  • Support the production, finalization and publication of Anticipatory Action Plans.
  • Support countries with risk monitoring and analysis, including the development of concept notes and proposals for anticipatory action projects.
  • Mapping of early warning systems and indicators available at national, regional and global level for risk monitoring.
  • Support simulation exercises for droughts and floods at national level, ensuring strong coordination with multi-disciplinary teams and partners at national and regional level.
  • Support the organization and planning of regional and country-level training events, workshops, and seminars.
  • Participate in regional meetings and EWAA related forums in order to create awareness, share good practices and advocate for the scaling up of the AA approach in resilience building among development and humanitarian actors.
  • Organize regular team meetings and conference calls/video-conferences, to support programme implementation at national level.
  • Develop of concept notes and TORs for programme activities, events, and recruitment of service providers.
  • Review, analyse and map the different policies/ strategies/programmes/declarations on DRR in Southern Africa to support the integration of AA.
  • Support the organisation and coordination of monthly RAAWG meetings.
  • Support regional and national communications officers to produce regular Bulletins on EWAA activities, climate and forecasts.
  • Perform any other duties, as required.

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Requirements:

  • A university degree in disaster risk reduction, agronomy or related sciences;
  • At least 3 years of experience in disaster risk reduction for agriculture and food security.
  • Working knowledge of English

Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Extent and relevance of experience in developing anticipatory action protocols for cyclones and floods, dry spells and drought;
  • Extent and relevance of experience in coordinating implementation of projects for drought, cyclones and floods at field level;
  • Familiarity with national, regional and global disaster risk reduction policies and frameworks, including contingency planning at country level;
  • Familiarity with shock responsive social protection systems, and use of cash+ approaches for anticipatory action;
  • Knowledge of and experience in working with early warning systems and indicators for risk monitoring.
