Position Purpose:

  • Under the guidance and supervision of OCHA ROSEA, the Humanitarian Affairs Officer supports relevant coordination activities, managing information, promoting preparedness for, and coordinating response to emergencies. This position is located in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Facilitate emergency preparedness and response to emergencies in crisis-prone areas.

  • Annual preparedness and contingency plan reviewed; preparedness capacity strengthened.
  • Support national contingency planning process.
  • Coordinate joint Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) disaster impact/needs assessments.
  • Support joint resource mobilization efforts .eg Central Emergency Respond Fund (CERF) application processes

Qualification:

  • Advanced University degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Political Science, Social Science, Public Administration, International Studies, Economics or related area or;
  • A first-level University degree (bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the related fields with an additional 2 years of relevant experience will be given due consideration in lieu of an Advanced University degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum up to 2 years (with master’s degree or equivalent) or 2 years (with bachelor’s degree) of progressively responsible relevant professional experience in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation, and development, or other related areas is required.
  • National or international experience responding to natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies is required.
  • Demonstrated experience on awareness of UN institutional mandates, policies, rules, and procedures, particularly in relation to humanitarian response and coordination is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience and In-depth knowledge of humanitarian principles is an asset.
  • Proven experience of the ability to work in an inter-agency environment are required.
  • Experience working with donors, government counterparts, technical staff, and other stakeholders in a collaborative manner is required.

Language requirements

  • Fluency in English and the language(s) of the country is required.
