Duties and Responsibilities:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This position is located in the UNEP’s Africa Office at the Nairobi duty station, within the Africa Regional Science-Policy sub-Programme. UNEP’s Africa Office’s plays a vital role in the implementation of UNEP global programmes in the Africa region by initiating, coordinating, and catalysing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental challenges and emerging issues. In the context of the UNEP’s ‘New Delivery Model’ policy, the Regional Science-Policy sub-Programme empowers Governments, partners, and other stakeholders to make evidence-based decisions for the environment. This is accomplished through environmental assessments, identification of emerging issues and fostering of policy action towards the achievement of the outcomes for the climate action, nature action, and chemicals and pollution action subprogrammes in line with the UNEP’s Medium-Term Strategy (2022-2025) and biennial programme of work.
Qualification & Experience:
- Advanced university degree (at least master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental management, sustainable development, ecology, international relations, or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project and/or programme management, or related tasks is required.
- At least two years of experience in contributing to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals and liaising with the UN Country Teams (UNCTs) on national development and programming processes, including in the context of African Union’s Agenda 2063 and UN Regional Collaborative Platforms (RCP), is required.
- Experience in working with multi-partner projects and/or programmes for the United Nations or comparable international organizations, including in providing in-depth analytics, monitoring projects and drafting progress reports, is desirable.
