The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

UN Habitat Job Vacancy 2023

Responsibilities:

The individual contractor will work in the Knowledge and Innovation Branch, under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Data and Analytics Unit. She/he will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Contribute to the analysis and updates of the Urban Indicators Database including follow up with National Statistical systems on SDGs and Urban Monitoring Framework (UMF) related data and reporting mechanisms.
  • Compile a database comprising of selected Human Settlement Indicators at the city level based on Degree of Urbanization (DEGURBA) for selected countries.
  • Contribute to piloting data gathering using tools developed as part of monitoring and reporting of urban SDGs in countries.
  • Prepare/contribute to various statistical tables and annexes, as part of UN-Habitat flagship reports, background papers relating to the NUA and other internationally agreed goals and targets relevant to sustainable urbanization and human settlements.

Qualification & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. A diploma in Statistics, or any other closely related field is desired.
  • At least ten years of progressive experience as researcher/analyst working on a broad range of urban and human settlements issues at the local, national and international levels is required.
  • Some level of knowledge of and experience working with the SDGs is highly desirable.

Languages:

For this consultancy, fluency in oral and written English is required. Although not a requirement, knowledge of any other UN language will be an advantage
